driving that doesn't revolve around weight. Here are some top tips for driving
more economically in a haulage vehicle, whether it's a wide load or heavy haulage.
Check tyre pressures
Low tyre
pressures can increase rolling resistance and 20% extra fuel is burned when
your vehicle tries to cope with this. Before every journey, check and alter
your vehicle's tyre pressures to suit your vehicle and what you're hauling.
Tyres at an optimum pressure will not only be safer but also improve fuel
economy.
Smooth driving and avoid braking
One of the
best things we can do for driving, whether it's a tiny car or huge lorry, is to
try to drive as smoothly as possible. This includes easing off the throttle,
reduce braking and observing as much as possible so you have time to act rather
than brake or accelerate last minute, which wastes fuel. Examples of this
include not following cars too closely (besides, it's illegal to tailgate) and
taking your foot off the pedals when going downhill so that the momentum
carries you through. Never coast without your car in gear though, as this can
be dangerous!
Turn off extras
We

distances, so the comforts of the radio or air-con can help you feel at home
and entertained on a lengthy journey. However, where possible, try to turn off
any extras as much as possible. If it's a cold day, wrap up warmer rather than
use the heater and, if it's a warm day, try wearing cooler clothing and having
the windows open instead of the air-con. If you're stuck in traffic for long
periods of time, try turning off the engine while you wait - anything from 30
seconds or more can be beneficial and save you fuel.
